Judicial Council Update -- (Continued from page 1)
The thrust of this program is to provide law students with an opportunity to hone their legal skills under the supervision of judge mentors who teach law students how to become great lawyers. This experience also exposes the interns to the Court process and litigation from the perspective of the bench.
In March, the Judicial Council celebrated its' 10th Anniversary and Symposium at the Historic Courthouse, formally the District of Columbia Court of Appeals. The founders of the Judicial Council were celebrated at this event dubbed "Then and Now". The audience was full and engaged and they commented about how much they learned about the history of the local Courts from distinguished jurist who were panel members and enjoyed the event. The elevation to the bench of Administrative Law Judges from the 1970's forward was also discussed by the panel members. Also, to further enhance our ability to judge more effectively in the courtroom, Judicial Council members participated in cultural competence training lead by Tawara Goode, the Assistant Director of the National Center for Cultural Competence at Georgetown University.
This is just a glimpse of our activities for the 2010 Program Year. I think you will agree that participation of judges in these and other activities exemplify our commitment to positively impacting the profession through education and community service. As the Judicial Council forges ahead over the coming years, it will continue impacting justice by doing justice and creating opportunities for the profession to thrive. |
